Security-Widefield is boxed in by roads that are hard on glass. Highway 85 runs along the west side with gravel and freight trucks. Powers comes down from the north with everything off the east side of the city. And Fort Carson traffic funnels through Fontaine and Main Street twice a day. Sitting in line behind a truck is where most of the chips we fix down here come from.
Winter makes it worse. The sand that goes down on Powers and 85 sits on the shoulders for weeks, and every dry, windy day in February throws it right back into traffic.
Apartment lots and shift work are fine
A lot of folks down here work shifts, and a lot of the parking is apartment or townhouse lots instead of driveways. That works for us. We need a parking space we can work around for about an hour, permission to be there, and no rain on the car. Meeting your car in the lot at work during your shift is usually easiest. You don't lose any time at all.
Some apartment complexes like a heads-up first, so it's worth a quick call to the office.
What it'll cost
Price depends on the car, not the neighborhood. A chip repair is about $60 to $110. A plain windshield on a common car or truck is usually $250 to $400. Add a rain sensor or heated wipers and it's more like $350 to $600. If there's a lane-assist camera, it has to be recalibrated, and you're looking at $550 to $1,100. Glass usually goes through comprehensive, which isn't treated like an at-fault accident. Every company's a little different, though, so ask your agent. We do glass, not insurance.
